Ana de Armas was criticized for her accent in ‘Blonde’, a Netflix film: this is how they supported her

The first images of the actress Ana de Armas who was cast as Marilyn Monroe for the Netflix movie “Blonde” left no doubt about her great resemblance and the wonderful work that made her a Hollywood diva.

However, the trailer of the film was not so well received. Just a few hours after it was broadcast on several platforms, some social media users pointed out a detail of the Cuban’s performance that they did not like at all.

Ana de Armas was criticized for her “accent” when she played Marilyn Monroe

Although the movie “Blonde” will not arrive on Netflix until September 23, some negative comments about Ana de Armas’ performance have emerged on social networks.

On Twitter, for example, several users pointed out that the Cuban-born actress has an “accent” when she delivers her lines, which they claimed caused them to break the illusion of her performance.

“Did they really make this whole Marilyn Monroe movie and not hire Ana de Armas as an accent teacher?”, “I like Ana de Armas but I don’t understand why they cast her as Marilyn Monroe, you can still hear her accent” and “I know you all can still hear Ana de Armas’ accent” were some of the comments made on the social network.

For her part, the interpreter revealed in an interview with the newspaper “The Times of London”, published in January 2021, that she prepared for 9 months to master Norma Jeane Mortenson’s speaking style:

“It was so tiring, my brain was fried.”

Brad Pitt and the owners of Marilyn Monroe’s estate defended Ana de Armas’ performance

Although the actress has not commented on the negative messages on the networks, other authorities on the matter have already come forward to support her decision to choose the role.

Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group (ABG), which is responsible for the famous blonde’s estate, said:

“Any actor who steps into this role (of Marilyn) knows they have some very big shoes to fill. Right from the trailer, it sounds like Ana was a great casting choice, capturing Marilyn’s charm, humanity and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the whole movie!”

Brad Pitt, whose company Plan B is the producer of the film “Blonde”, added to these statements. In an interview with “ET” commented:

“She does it incredibly, it’s a difficult dress to fill. It took us 10 years (to make the film), only when we found Ana we were able to cross the finish line.”
