Pirates of the Caribbean 5: What Johnny Depp Turned Down for the 5th Movie

The fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Salazar’s Revenge sees Johnny Depp face off against a drunken Javier Bardem for revenge. However, originally the villain of this story was supposed to be a woman…

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge executive producer Terry Rossio wrote all but the final episode of the saga. However, the man was still involved in the first draft of the script, in which the villain was played by a woman.

A first for the Disney franchise. Although Penélope Cruz and Naomie Harris have played dangerous creatures with strong tempers in previous installments, the role of the villain has never been assigned to a woman. But this new narrative element didn’t convince the feature film star, as Terry Rossio reports on his blog:

My version was shelved because it portrayed evil and Johnny Depp thought it would be too much for Dark Shadows.

Tim Burton’s film really sees Depp and Eva Green pitted against each other as a spurned love interest willing to do anything for revenge. Therefore, in the end, Jeff Nathanson is unable to write the fifth part of the adventures of Jack Sparrow.

However, Tim Burton’s movie came out in 2012 and we’re allowed to think that there was water under the bridge. Was there another reason given by Johnny Depp? is turned on his blogTerry Rossio did not hesitate to express his bitterness:

“Sure, maybe my script was bad. But usually when I re-read a script that wasn’t made, it holds up, often better than the movie that ended up being produced. Sometimes it just takes one person’s decision. , often a whim , to undo years of history and world building.”
