Separation: When did you discover the “crime in Abidjan” and what did you indicate in it, in terms of whether you want to make a movie?

Thomas Nigijol :: I saw this in the late 90’s when he was a broadcaster at the art. He noted that the figure of this commissioner strangely reminded me of my father: at home, there was his photo, which was a gandarched in his past life in Cameroon, which had authority with this function. So this was a bit of contact – somewhere in my unconscious, or not – for me, in my life, with my story, but I didn’t want to adapt it, I was very young and not in the case. It returned two years ago when I finished my last show on my last scene: I touched something compared to children than with my parents, heredity, everything related to communication. I have a kind of glass ceiling and I wanted to continue.

I didn’t have a crazy desire for comedy, Derision. I wanted to continue to dig this item, which would eventually make me feel like a F from you My father’s father’s figure and I as a father. I started returning to the document because I often told myself: “Imagine if the father was a police officer” (laughs) This proposal was in terms that I told myself: “Here, I will try to adapt and intimate this documentary.” It would be a means of talking to me, my childhood quotes, my brothers and my sisters, of course, and my mother’s paternal figure at a certain level.

With a little modesty, slightly distant, slice all of this in a trailer in the world, where we will only be focused on his characters and Cameroon. Sometimes I was asked whether I could have a history elsewhere, but no: If I had to go to France, we would have contacted emigration, things that are not the subject of the film. And there, I wanted to talk about relationships with a family, so I wanted to put this man under his tensions in his professional life, F from you This is an investigation that eats slightly and this family on the verge of explosion.

This is needed to find a story in Cameroon, we feel it in front of the movie because we see that you also wanted to portray your parents’ country.

Totally! This is a movie where I create a little what Cameroon gave me. Or in the event of what I have, what I feel about populations, youth and grandmother, and grandmother, spiritual or otherwise. I realize that it is as beautiful as their granddaughter who was born and raised in France, do not forget where it comes from and returns, of course, in artistic way, but in its profession, its art. I realize that this is telling a lot. For me, in any case, he tells a lot, and it tells my children a lot.

If I had to put this story in France, we would have emigrated to it, with things that are not a movie subject

You talked about making a movie about you, does it mean that it was obvious as soon as you were going to the lead role, where several actors who meet, often refuse to do so?

Yes, because it was touched by intimate. If this was another achievement on the topic with which I have a distance, the question may be asked, but there is a lot of intimate. I knew I would realize and that I was going to play. I was inhabited by this subject, with a character. Everything was familiar to me, I was related to this topic, so it had to happen, there were no other alternatives.

This is a character that you feel close or, on the contrary, who portrays fears, what doesn’t he want? Because there are questions about violence, patriarchy that echoes the current society.

These are both a little, frankly, if I am sincere with you. I am far from him because I have succeeded in quoting the words where it was revealed to do a kind of analysis. And at the same time, I’m worried: I’m a little too, because I personally, my father’s son, I am the child of an education whose education I am not fully. I still have all this in me, just as there is an ultra -interesting thing I am doing, which I am today. And then there is something that I know they date (Laughs)

I wouldn’t say they are no longer relevant, but they are not useful and I do not see them with so much humor and irony as the fight in my daily life, so that it will not affect it. Because I have women and girls and because I am a citizen in this French society, and this does not restrict the favor of a woman’s sex or our families. I have to be quiet to this, but I also know that I am part of the problem as many. It is necessary to have humility to recognize that we were built on many bases that had to be slightly destroyed. You have to have this courage, it will be, but we are part of the problem. But just to say, real progress already exists.

You have said before that you do not want to be a comedy after your last show: How was this moment when the producers need to approach to tell you that you wanted to make a serious movie, inside the industry that likes placing people’s boxes?

(Laughs) For me it is 50/50: it’s not so serious a movie as in continuity that I am. When I said that I didn’t want a comedy, it is just that you left my show, which I felt like was not a comedy, but an emotional that I could not explain in a very clear way, so the desire is in place.

But from a professional point of view … I have distant memories of the people I am talking about about this project and who tells me: “Yeah, it’s interesting, but hey, you don’t want to do something else … (laughs) here, we want to laugh. Then that’s what the records are!” But it was never what I was pushing me, otherwise I would make comedies more popular, I would be much more in calculation, even on stage. But I have to unite, because before I am an actor, a director, I’m a man, I’m a citizen. I am especially human, I am an education that I had and I have to be right: when I am right and corrected, this is where I feel strong. If I feel that I start compromising or calculating, I clean myself.

It is strange that this project was the most fragile since the start of the case, which was the first co-sale, quite surprising and chewing because of its subject And I first go to the Cannes Film Festival as a director, two weeks of filmmakers. A beautiful thing is happening and I didn’t count it, I didn’t plan on. I just followed my instinct and my instinct did well. I think that when you do things with your heart – Comedy Whether Comedy, Drama or No Drama – Frankly do the job, we will always get the best of yourself. We have just seen this emotion when you have written a film at the Cannes Film Festival and you know how to culminated a personal and long project.

Yes it wasn’t a plan (Laughs) It was not a plan but ended well. This is wonderful because this job may not always be easy, there is a lot of interrogation. And when we are authenticated and fruit harvest that people have been named – because in two weeks, the Cannes Film Festival is nothing. And it happens at an age when I can get it. I have a course of life that makes him really warm: I’m happy but I’m not going to be proud. It feels good and it strengthens the future, because through this experience I know it will make it even more demanding on the adventures that I will approach as a director.

Each experience as a director is growing as an actor and vice versa?

Not at all. After that, if I really appreciate this movie, let’s say there is a part that I have shown so little that, yes, I doubt there are many people who find me, who will find me and see other things. But I knew that I had some buried things that were only asked to go out, so much so that even people who would see me on stage, who would follow me, or who would follow me again, is not very surprising. Because the anger was on stage, in fact. In other forms, but it has always been. So at one point, the right platform was necessary and it could be this film.

And I hope to be others. Other things in a different tone, but without denial of comedy because I love it. Just, I was never too conformist. I don’t like boxes, I like free. I did not do this to tell myself that I was going to lock in his place. So, I have the opportunity to open the field of opportunities and we will continue as much as we can with this philosophy.

How much did your comedy experience on this project, a police officer and more seriously?

Comedy is an emotion, it’s life. The point is that I hate Cabotina in comedy and even more in life. In the end, this subject was close to me, as we are talking a lot about the lack of communication, the complexity of communication, and through that we are doing introspection. We see his life, we say that we are not talking much in our homes. This silence, he sometimes says a lot. In the end, with the experience of comedy with experience, it is enough to understand that we are not going too much that we will be fair.

First of all, when you are a Cameroon -like society, you will develop this film in this society. It is very rich, very expressive. So we have everything you need to stay in life and don’t support the comedy. Even gravity has a special color, a special flavor. So, between the location of the film and the actors who were truly excellent, everything was good. We had the right ingredients to make a film that looked like what I wanted to announce.
