The text approved by the Education Commission expands the right to the choice of the public school, considering the shortest distance from the residence.
The Commission of the Chamber of Education representatives approved PL 4036/24, which provides for the possibility of enrollment in students in public schools in neighboring municipalities, provided that they are closer to the residence. To implement the measure, it will be necessary for the municipalities to establish administrative agreements.
The rapporteur of the bill, the French deputy Bayer (Republicans-GRS), added an amendment to the text that guarantees access to school transport to the students served by the new standard. The advantage will be valid for all stages of basic education, from kindergarten to high school.
Bayer stressed that the decisive factor will be the shortest distance between the student’s house and the school with an available vacant place. The project, written by Deputy Evair Vieira de Melo (PP-ES), aims to guarantee effective access to the right to education.
Now, the PL goes to the analysis of the Constitution and of Justice and citizenship (CCJ), where it will be evaluated finally before going to the Federal Senate.
