Luck on AppleTV+: The upbeat first animated film from Top Gun Maverick Studios

American studio Skydance (“Top Gun Maverick”) presents its first animated film “Luck”, which will be discovered exclusively on AppleTV+. Meeting with director Peggy Holmes and screenwriter Kiel Murray!

After Top Gun Maverick hit the box office, the American studio presents Luck this Friday, August 5, its first animated production. This story about a young orphan suffering from chronic bad luck who discovers an imaginary land after meeting a super-lucky black cat is directed by Peggy Holmes.

A few weeks after the presentation of the first images of the film at the Annecy festival, we were able to meet the director of the film Kil Murray and his screenwriter!

How did the idea for this film come about?

Kiel Murray (screenwriter of the film): When I came to the project, it was already the idea of an imaginary country where luck comes from. But I wrote the script to revolve the story around the theme of love. Also, we tried to make the land of trouble more fun than it was in the previous version.

Peggy, why did you choose this film as the subject of your first animated film?

Peggy Holmes (Director): I found so much love and magic there that I couldn’t say no. It was not an easy film to make, especially since we are in the middle of a pandemic and far from each other. I’ve lost count of endless meetings and discussions with Zoom. For me, family is the most important thing in life and that is the main message of “Luck” for me.

Do you consider yourself lucky?

Kiel Murray: Not a day goes by that I don’t have trouble! Especially now during the promotion of this movie. I’ve had a lot of delays with my plane flights lately, especially when I was coming back from the Annecy Festival! But I’m also very lucky, namely that I was able to go to France and meet a lot of people.

What is your personal definition of luck?

Kiel Murray: If you have love in your life, then you have the best luck in the world because nothing else matters. And this, despite all the misfortunes that may come your way. I think being lucky is something unpredictable. All you can do in life is stay focused on your dreams and work hard to make them come true.

Peggy Holmes: This film approaches the concept of luck in an original way. The film shows that we are not in control of our luck or misfortune, but we can always change the course of events. You never know what tomorrow will bring and whether we will be lucky or not. Anyway, hopefully society will learn that in life you should never give up on your dreams and as long as there is love, there is life!

Do you have a lucky charm?

Kiel Murray: Without hesitation: my kids and my dog. My dog is more human than people and I have long conversations with him (laughs)!

Peggy Holmes: No, no. But part of our company is based in Madrid, Spain. One day on my way to work, I found a penny on the road. I took it for luck. By the way, in the USA we have a proverb: “Find a penny, take it and you will be lucky all day.” Give it to a friend and you’ll be lucky for the rest of your life.” I love this beautiful philosophy of life.
