Test your knowledge of shark movies on the day of the release of the movie “The Year of the Shark”.
The Bucherma Brothers’ new film, Year of the Shark, hit our darkrooms last Wednesday.
A year after Teddy and his werewolf, young directors explore the myth of the shark.
In the feature film, Maya, a marine police officer in the mountains, sees her worst nightmare come true: retirement! Thierry, his wife, has already planned a campsite and a mobile home.
But the vacationer’s disappearance puts the entire coast on alert: a shark flies into the bay! With the help of his young colleagues, Eugene and Blaise, he gets the opportunity to offer himself one last mission…
Worn by Marina Fois, Kad Merad, Jean-Pascal Zade and Christine Gaultier, the year of the shark is a clear nod to the Steven Spielberg film Jaws, Bad Chicks…
We give you the pitch, it’s up to you to figure out which movie it is!

With this film, Ludovic and Zoran Bucherma wanted to shoulder the burden of a genre film. Another explains:This is the fiction of the film. Once you’ve seen Spielberg’s Jaws, you’ll never forget the film’s impact. There is no such thing as a film of the same genre. Often a shark movie, it quickly becomes a parody.”
“There we really wanted to get back to the essence of the genre: that is, first of all, to shoot danger in an environment that does not normally fit it, the beach. The shark is the summer monster that comes to ruin the party. For us, there is material for “cinema”, there is something to shoot and something to say.“
Therefore, the Year of the Shark focuses more on the fear that the presence of the shark causes among vacationers and locals than on the shark itself.

Indeed, if the shark movie is often inseparable from the Z series, the Bucher brothers take the genre seriously: “We liked the idea of a monster, a threat on this beach, but we didn’t want to make it a joke.
We started developing this story before writing Ted. What we liked was the confrontation with genre cinema, taking a very famous monster of American cinema, but taking it to a place where it didn’t belong in the first place: the southwest of France.
Because if shark movies have been legion on the other side of the Atlantic since the 1970s, Year of the Shark is really the first French shark movie.
To create the marine mammal, the directors chose an animatronic shark, not one created with digital effects. They explain: “We didn’t see how we filmed the tennis ball in the water and we were saying to the actors, ‘Look, you’re scared, the shark is coming!'” It’s funny.
“The first time we saw this incredible doll created by Pascal Molina in the water, we were really impressed. Her skin comes to life with the movements of the water, there are reflections, her cheeks spread out, it was stunning. “
