The results of the study showed that increased fear accelerated metabolism and raised the production of defense cells
Terror is good for health! A study by Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh revealed that watching horror movies can bring benefits beyond entertainment: they help relieve stress, reduce pain and even contribute to physical well-being.
According to researchers, productions of the genre stimulate the release of dopamine and endorphin – neurotransmitters known for their relaxing properties, often called βNatural CannabisOf the human body. These hormones are responsible for increasing the sense of pleasure and reducing the perception of pain.
The psychologist Kristen Knowlesone of those responsible for the study, explained that suspense and fear caused by films trigger an intense physical response, similar to that faced in real threat situations. βTerror movies act as a type of emotional training. When facing a fictional threat, the body releases stress hormones such as adrenaline, which increase heart rate and alertness. When the tension ends, the sense of relief is realβHe says.
Second KnowlesThis exposure controlled to intense emotions can strengthen psychological resilience. She points out that during the covid-19 pandemic, fans of the genre showed greater emotional stability, possibly because they are used to dealing with fear and anxiety symbolically.
The study also points out that the fear generated by these productions helps to distract the brain from pain, directing attention to threat assessment – momentarily reducing other uncomfortable physical sensations.
In addition to the psychological effects, a previous study of the University of Westminster observed physical benefits by watching horror movies. In an experiment with 10 volunteers, the researchers measured indicators such as heartbeat, oxygen rates, and white blood cell levels. The results showed that increased fear accelerated metabolism and raised the production of defense cells.
