Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. may have starred Thunder in the tropics, but depending on who you ask, some might say that Tom Cruise stole the show as the menacing and rude studio executive Les Grossman in the action comedy. Wearing a tight dress, prosthetic hands and a bald head to bring this character he invented to life, Cruise’s performance, complete with sweet dance moves, earned him a Golden Globe nomination, and we’ve been talking about Grossman’s Restitution for years. . . Now, those efforts would resume and Cruise is looking to make it happen with Christopher McQuarrie.
Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie have been very close since the latter took on the role of director and screenwriter on the film Mission Impossible affiliate, since 2015 rebellious nation (although McQuarrie did uncredited rewrites on Ghost Protocol). These two are currently working Mission: Impossible 8alias Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2but the public can also see their work together now in the form of Top Gun: Maverick, which McQuarrie co-wrote. After the success these two have had together on stories centered around Ethan Hunt and Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Term reports that Cruise and McQuarrie are now “obsessed” with Les Grossman, although it is unclear if they are looking to create an entire film around him or include him in one of the other film projects they are preparing.
The prospect of a Les Grossman spin-off film first surfaced in 2010, two years later Thunder in the tropics He left. In 2012, Michael Bacall, who wrote this version of the spin-off, said the story would explore the source of Grossman’s anger problems. A decade later, no one would be blamed for thinking this project was scrapped, but it’s clear that Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are determined to bring this character back to the big screen. If they stick to a direct spin-off, two questions come to mind. First, will Bacall’s script continue to be used or will someone else be hired to do a different take? Second, any other Thunder in the tropics Do the characters appear there?
However, as already mentioned, it’s possible that Les Grossman will simply keep his secondary character status in something else that Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are working on. The Deadline story also mentions that the duo have an “original song and dance musical” that Cruise intends to direct, as well as “another original action movie with franchise potential.” It’s hard to imagine Grossman organically fitting into one of these projects, though the sight of an angry Grossman singing songs in a musical is fun enough to pay happily to see the final product. We already know that Grossman has the moves, as you’ll see in the clip below, so why not add vocals to the mix as well?
To be clear, just because Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are working on these projects doesn’t mean everyone will see the light of day. Maybe something Les Grossman-centric has a better chance of moving forward because it ties into a popular sitcom, or maybe the studio executives are more interested in Tom Cruise directing another action movie or showing off his musical skills (he once has sung in rock of the ages) instead of repeating a character from a film released nearly a decade and a half ago. Oh, and let’s not forget that Cruise still has that movie he plans to shoot in space with Doug Liman. There is no doubt that it will take a long time out of your schedule.
Gossipify will continue to share updates on what’s to come in Tom Cruise’s career, but you can still watch for now Top Gun: Maverick scoring box office records in theaters and many other 2022 theatrical releases, and we’ll see the actor back in action as Ethan Hunt when Mission: Impossible – Part of the estimateand arrives on July 14, 2023.
