Jordan Peele is back! And he’s hitting hard with his third feature, No, an extraterrestrial story he conjures up on our mic in the company of his co-stars.
Who would have bet after seeing his Keegan-Michael Key sketches that Jordan Peele would become one of the new big names in horror when he stepped behind the camera? In their work, of course, there were some hints, sometimes disturbing, and where the influence of the fourth dimension (which he then controlled and told the reset) was reflected. But he really surprised most audiences with Get Out.
We then followed, and today here is Nope, his third feature as a director. This time it’s about a supernatural discovery deep in a lost valley in California, but the recipe remains the same, with this blend of genre cinema and social commentary that once again works wonders. Except it makes me shiver.
A new opus, the main stakeholder told us, in the company of his co-stars: Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Brandon Perea or even Daniel Kaluuya, who he discovers after Get Out.
When it was released, Jordan Peele listed it as one of the top five social thrillers he would make. Even after that, if he somewhat reconsidered his words and said he could do more, there is a real thematic and stylistic continuity between his films, so much so that we now recognize his touch. Including the feature films he’s exclusively producing, like the recent Candyman.
Like Come Out and Us, Nope’s starting point is as much an excuse to materialize real desires for cinema as it is to talk about different topics. And without betraying the secret that is also one of the engines of his work, know that this opus especially evokes the power of the image, the gaze, the community of the spectacle or the notion of appropriation.
