French production company Why Not Productions has released the first photo of Johnny Depp in its upcoming film “Jeanne du Barry”, in which he plays the role of King Louis XV.

The company that made the award-winning dramas “Rust and Bone” (2012) and “The Prophet” (2009) also confirmed that filming on the film (formerly called “La Favorite”) began on July 26 in venues such as Versailles and other castles in the Paris region, as well as in the studio.

Directed by French director and actress Maïwenn (“My King”), the production marks Depp’s first film role in three years and follows his victory in the turbulent libel trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.

The film will be in French and also marks Depp’s debut in the language. The actor lived for many years in France while he was married to actress Vanessa Paradis, and speaks French, but, according to the American press, with a strong American accent.

The ambitious drama is loosely inspired by the life of Jeanne du Barry, Louis XV’s last mistress at the court of Versailles, after Madame de Pompadour.

Louis XV ruled France from 1715 to 1744 and was known for his extravagance, as well as his many mistresses.

In addition to directing, Maïwenn co-stars in the film in the role of the title courtesan.

The first is scheduled for 2023.
