What is the movie?
The narrative takes place between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century. At the age of ten, Carlota Joaquina is promised to João, from Portugal. Talent and polite, the young princess is approved by the Spanish court and sent to Lisbon, where he comes across a much less glamorous destination than they portrayed in the paintings and protocols of the nobility. John, of introspective temperament, prefers the sacred singing and the cultivation of flowers to the company of the new wife.
With the death of the heir prince and the aggravation of the mental health of Queen D. Maria I, the couple ends up elevated to the Portuguese throne. Between the turbulence caused by the French revolution and the threats of the Napoleonic invasion, the Portuguese court holds a historical and silent escape for Brazil, an episode that marks a turnaround in the destination of the colony and gives rise to a new phase of Luso-Brazilian history.
