Like many procedures, NCIS it underwent a number of cast changes during its nearly 20 years on the air, but until season 19 Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs had been one of the show’s few constants from the start. However, in the fourth episode of season 19, “Great Wide Open”, Harmon left the popular TV show, although he continued to appear on the NCIS opening credits for the rest of the season. 10 months after this episode aired, Harmon finally talked about Gibbs’ big goodbye.
NCIS Season 19 aired its season finale on May 23 and we are just over a month into season 20 with a NCIS: Hawaii Go through. Meanwhile, the DVD collection of NCIS Season 19 will be released on Tuesday, August 16 and Eastern time was included in a special article in which Mark Harmon discussed where we left off with Gibbs, saying:
What has always drawn me here is the character I play and keeping it fresh and inspiring. From the point of view of the plot, this character has taken the path that he has taken. I thought he was honest and good.
The basics of Mark Harmon’s departure from NCIS began forming in the second half of season 18, shortly after the show said goodbye to Maria Bello’s Jacqueline Sloane. Leroy Jethro Gibbs was suspended by NCIS for assaulting a suspected dog abuse suspect, and it became clear that he was not interested in getting his badge back. Gibbs then began bonding with reporter Marcie Warren (played by Harmon’s wife, Pam Dawber), and the two teamed up to investigate a string of mysterious murders. The two concluded that the perpetrator was a serial killer, but their investigation hit a snag when Gibbs’ new boat exploded in the final minutes of the season 18 finale as he was driving it.
Fortunately, Gibbs survived the attempt on his life and, over the course of his four episodes of season 19, uncovered the truth behind why these murders took place. Eventually he took him and Sean Murray’s Timothy McGee to Nekton Bay, Alaska, where the two and Gary Cole’s Alden Parker put an end to this threat once and for all. While Cole decided to let Gibbs go instead of holding him back as his FBI superiors told him, Mark Harmon’s character decided to stay in Alaska rather than return to Washington DC with Cole and McGee because he found a “sense of peace”.
As Mark Harmon said in this one NCIS A featurette from season 19, he thought Gibbs’ journey for these final episodes made sense in terms of shaking things up for the character, because it sounded like the kind of path Gibbs would take. Harmon also provided the following statement of assurance on how Gibbs is doing these days:
I’m not retired … The character lives in Alaska as far as I know.
While Leroy Jethro Gibbs chose not to return to NCIS, Alden Parker, who was fired by the FBI, was hired as team leader by McGee, Wilmer Valderrama’s Nick Torres, and Jessica Knight by Katrina Law. And while he’s no longer on the show, Gibbs was mentioned frequently throughout the rest of the show. NCIS Season 19, even when it was revealed that he founded a college scholarship club. As for whether Mark Harmon could ever return to the CBS show, Sean Murray said shortly before the season 19 finale that he thought “there’s a chance it could happen,” and CBS Entertainment president’s Kelly Kahl said on the day. after the finale airs that “the door is open if you want to appear for an episode or episodes”.
You can count on Gossipify to share if Mark Harmon is officially announced to return to NCIS, again as a series regular or guest star. For now, fans of the show can expect Season 20 to air on September 19, and our 2022 TV schedule covers other programs that will air throughout the year.
