
The American pay channel Starz released the first photos and the trailer of the miniseries based on “Dangerous Liaisons”, a literary classic released by Choderlos de Laclos in 1782.
The original work has had several film adaptations, the most successful being the version directed by Stephen Frears in 1988, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, which won three Oscars. There were also contemporary versions, such as “Segundas Intenções” (1999), with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, and even a Brazilian version, shown as a miniseries on Rede Globo.
The Starz production is set in the original era, but will tell the origins of the unhealthy relationship between the Marquise de Merteuil and the Viscount de Valmont, met by young lovers in Paris on the eve of the French Revolution. The plot explores the decadence of the nobility in pre-revolutionary Paris, showing the seduction and manipulation skills of the couple in their social ascent.
The cast highlights Alice Englert (“Sixteen Moons”) and Nicholas Denton (“Glitch”) as the infamous lovers, as well as Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”) and Carice Van Houten (“Game of Thrones”) as the nobles involved. in the rise of the future marquise.
The production is written by Harriet Warner (creator of “Tell Me Your Secrets”), who also acts as showrunner, and the direction is split between Olly Blackburn (“Sanditon”) and Leonora Lonsdale (“The Yellow Horse”).
