In a recent interview with Empire, Quentin Tarantino revealed how he came up with the title of his first feature film.
Ever since Quentin Tarantino’s first film was released in 1992, moviegoers have struggled to make sense of the title. Original, mysterious and even mysterious, these “reservoir dogs” have long been of interest, which has led to many theories about its meaning and origin.
Is this about Brian De Palma’s Body Double, in which we can see a dog falling into a tank? Or is this a reference to Goodbye Children? Indeed, according to legend, while Tarantino was still working at the video store, one of his customers mispronounced the title of Louis Male’s film, which would be credited to the famous Reservoir Dogs.
However, as the filmmaker recently said on the microphone of Empire magazine, neither hypothesis is correct. Indeed, when he came to introduce his new podcast, Video Archive PodcastTarantino finally lifted the curtain on the mystery surrounding his title:
“No, it’s not from a client”he said.
“This comes from me, making fun of Buñuel’s film Un Chien Andalou.” I started parodying my movie Reservoir Dog. (…) It was a mockery of such films. But when I named my film that way, I said to myself, “That’s a great title! I have no idea what that means, but it’s a great title!'”
Tarantino goes on to explain that after finishing the script for the film, he went to McDonald’s and put the script on the counter to pick up an order. It was there that the young man, upon seeing the title, told him that he thought it was brilliant. It is enough to convince a novice director!
