Actors, directors and industry professionals commit not to work with festivals and Israeli companies accused of complicity in war crimes against the Palestinian people
The actress Emma Stone (Bugonia) and more than 1,200 cinema and TV professionals, including Oscar, Emmy, Bafta and Golden’s winners, have signed a manifesto stating that they will not collaborate with Israeli institutions and companies.implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people”.
The document, released by the Film Workers Movement for Palestine, has adhesions of names like filmmakers Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor creatures), AVA DUVERNAY (Selma), Adam McKay (Don’t look up), Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies) and JOSHUA OPPENHEIMER (The act of killing), besides the actors Olivia Colman (The favorite), AYO EDEBIRI (The bear), Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight), Gael García Bernal (Gross loves), Riz Ahmed (The Sound of Silence), JAVIER BARDEM (Where the weak have no time), Tilda Swinton (We need to talk about Kevin), Lily Gladstone (Flower Moon Assassins) and Josh O’Connor (The Crown).
Among the cited targets are festivals such as the Jerusalem Film Festival, Haifa International Film Festival, DOCAVIV and TLVFESTas well as local producers and distributors. For the organizers, these institutions participate in an “standardization” of the Israeli government amid conflict in Gaza.
The manifesto rescues the mobilization of Filmmakers United Against apartheidgroup created in 1987 by Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme and other filmmakers, who boycotted South Africa’s film industry during the apartheid regime.
“Faced with the failure of our leaders, artists need to position themselves and refuse complicity”, Said the actress Hannah Einbinder. The action follows steps similar to the boycott launched last year by more than 7,000 writers and publishing professionals against Israeli publishers.
