Meredith Gray has received more than her fair share of abuse in 18 seasons Grey’s Anatomy. He nearly drowned, survived a plane crash, kept a live bomb inside a patient, and more. It’s hard to predict which of Meredith’s multiple near-death experiences, actress Ellen Pompeo would choose her as her favorite of hers as she prepares to do a more limited role in Grey’s Anatomy next season 19 – but what he chose was definitely not what I expected.
Ellen Pompeo spoke every time Meredith almost died on your podcast Tell me (opens in a new tab), and despite at least seven tragedies in which the Seattle surgeon was about to meet her creator, the actress didn’t hesitate when asked to pick her favorite. She immediately called “The Sound of Silence” of season 12, directed by Denzel Washington. Here’s what Pompeo said about the episode:
My favorite scene of Meredith where she almost died was definitely episode 12 × 09 [“The Sound of Silence”]. I would definitely rate it as one of my favorite episodes of all time, and working with one of my favorite actor heroes was definitely one of the show’s two highlights in all those seasons.
Her work with Hollywood legend Denzel Washington is Ellen Pompeo’s reason for choosing this as not only her favorite near-death experience of Meredith, but one of her best moments on the show overall! And precisely for this reason it was not the response I expected from the actress.
Although “The Sound of Silence” is one of the Grey’s Anatomy The best episodes so far in which Meredith is attacked by a runaway patient and shown in various stages of her recovery over a six-week period, Ellen Pompeo and Denzel Washington disagreed on set.
In an earlier episode of her podcast, Ellen Pompeo recalled improvising part of an emotional scene in which the patient who assaulted Meredith came to apologize. She the actress said:
I was like, ‘Look at me when you’re apologizing. Watch me!’ And it wasn’t in the dialogue. And Denzel got HAM on my butt. It was like, ‘I’m the manager. Don’t tell him what to do! I was like, ‘Look, son of a bitch, this is my show. This is my set. Who do you say?
When he told the story, he insisted that there was no bad blood between the two professionals, attributing it to the fact that the actors were passionate about their craft. However, I can’t imagine engaging in such a passionate exchange to make it onto my “best days at work” list.
Denzel Washington seemed to confirm that the behind-the-scenes story was very noisy at all, dodging the question when asked. Variety earlier this year if he remembered that incident. He said first “No, no”, before adding, with a slight smile, according to the profession, “but that’s okay”.
It’s a shame about the character Meredith has had to fight for her life so many times (not to mention witnessing everything Grey’s Anatomy More heartbreaking moments from Yes the saddest deaths ), but it has become an excellent TV for loyal viewers. I hope that Ellen Pompeo’s reduced number of episodes in season 19 isn’t the result of another tragedy, but I think we’ve already learned to never assume that Meredith is safe! Find out for yourself when Grey’s Anatomy returns at 9 p.m. ET Thursday, Oct. 6 on ABC. Check out ours TV program 2022 to see all upcoming releases.
