Tonight on TV: This is one of the best SF movies you haven’t seen yet!

Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Alex Garland explores artificial intelligence.

A screenwriter for fifteen years – he’s the author of Danny Boyle’s feature films The Beach, 28 Days Later and The Sun – Alex Garland finally transitioned to directing in 2015 with Ex Machina.

Winner of the Jury Prize at the International Gérardmer Festival, this science fiction film explores the figure of artificial intelligence, drawing inspiration from the work of roboticist Murray Shanahan and mathematician Alan Turing.

Nevertheless, Alex Garland re-examines the genre through a sophisticated framework. Ava, the mysterious android, portrayed with sincerity by Alicia Vikander, unfolds in a minimalist camera that leaves room for emotion. A mix of organic and synthetic, inspired by Brancusi and Bauhaus sculptures, but also by the suspension systems used in Formula 1, it is as disturbing as it is questioning our humanity.

Oscar winner for Best Visual Effects, Former Machina It is a very little known, relevant, atypical and even feminist piece. With an average audience rating of 3.9 out of 5, it is considered one of the 15 best science fiction films of the decade 2010-2019 by AlloCiné internet users. Special mention to the brilliant Oscar Isaac and his Anthology Dance Scene.
