Independent studio A24, increasingly a favorite with film buffs, has released the trailer for “God’s Creatures,” a dramatic thriller in which a mother is torn between protecting her son and doing the right thing.
The story takes place in a windswept fishing village, where the mother played by Emily Watson (“War Horse”) welcomes the prodigal son, played by Paul Mescal (“Normal People”). But her happiness at her return is cut short when the police look for her to check an alibi from her son, accused of a crime by a young woman. The lie she tells tears apart her community.
Directed by Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer (“The Fits”), the film had its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it delighted critics, earning a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes . Some of the accolades are in the trailer, including the inevitable “masterpiece”.
The commercial debut is scheduled for September 30 in the United States and there is no release date in Brazil yet.
