Magga Stína was part of the flotilla with Greta Thunberg, intercepted by Israeli authorities off the coast of Gaza
Icelandic singer Bjork released a statement this Wednesday (8) calling for the release of Magga Stínaa childhood friend and also a musician. Stína was detained by Israeli forces on the night of October 7 after trying to reach Gaza with humanitarian aid.
According to reports, Stína was among the activists who participated in the Sumud Global Flotillasailing in one of the boats that accompanied the activist Greta Thunberg. The objective of the action was to pave the way for international aid to enter Gaza.
“My childhood friend, the musician Magga Stínahas just been kidnapped by the Israeli army,” he wrote Bjork on your social networks. In the publication, the artist emphasizes that “it is illegal to prevent food from reaching children” and shows support for attempts to send aid to the population of Gaza.

In recent weeks, more than 450 flotilla activists have been detained by Israeli authorities, who have intercepted almost all of the approximately 40 boats involved in the operation. Greta Thunbergwho was also detained and later deported, reported suffering “mistreatment and abuse” during her arrest.
The family of Magga Stína is campaigning for his safety and putting pressure on the Icelandic government to demand his immediate release. Bjork took the opportunity to demand that the Icelandic authorities “follow their own support for Palestine 11 years ago” – Iceland recognized the Palestine as a country in 2014 – and “stop all commercial interactions with Israel until the genocide in Gaza finish.”
Cultural boycott
This is not the first public positioning of Bjork in relation to the conflict. In September this year, the singer joined the campaign No Music For Genocide (No Music for Genocide), withdrawing its catalog from streaming platforms in Israel. The artist’s music was geo-blocked on Spotify and Apple Music for Israeli users.
The initiative seeks to carry out a cultural boycott similar to that carried out against apartheid in South Africa. Bjork joins other artists who joined the campaign, such as JapaneseBreakfast, Paramore and Idleswho also blocked their music from streaming services available in Israel.
