From the Vasco reserve to the national team: Paulo Henrique’s journey up to his call-up

The right back is at the peak of his career at the age of 29 and had a very complicated path at Cruz-Maltino until he won the starting place

Paulo Henrique represents the Vasco in the Brazilian team. Coach Carlo Ancelotti called him up for the friendlies against South Korea and Japan in Asia. The call-up sparked great celebration among fans and players, especially due to the difficult path undertaken by the right-back to get to this moment.

Revealed by Londrina, Paulo Henrique began his career in clubs in the south of Brazil. Over the years he has defended Iraty, Operário, União Beltrão, Metropolitano, Atlético Tubarão, Paraná and Juventude. Only in 2023, at the age of 26, did he get his first chance at a bigger club: Atlético. However, the opportunity was short-lived: he played only three games.

Atlético subsequently loaned him to Vasco, but the situation remained complicated. Paulo Henrique spent most of his time in reserve, behind Puma Rodríguez, and only made his debut after three months at the club. In the second half, under the guidance of Ramón Díaz, he was excluded from the list of similar players and also lost space in favor of Robson Bambu, an improvised winger. Only in the last part of the Brasileirão did he regain momentum and shine with a decisive goal against Botafogo and an assist for Serginho in the match against Red Bull Bragantino, a move that guaranteed Vasco’s stay in Série A.

Paulo Henrique earned a place in the national team in the victory over Cruzeiro, in which he scored a goal and made an assist, under the eyes of CBF scouts.

Purchased from Vasco, PH becomes the absolute owner

In 2024, Vasco decided to invest in Paulo Henrique and bought the rights for $1 million (around R$4.8 million at the time). From that moment on, the full-back began to build his path towards the national team. He established himself as an absolute starter, attracting attention with his speed and physical strength. Furthermore, he led important statistics – such as defensive tackles and attacking dribbles – and became one of the most consistent full-backs in Brazilian football.

If 2024 represented consolidation, 2025 symbolizes Paulo Henrique’s redemption. At 29, the player is experiencing the best moment of his career. In addition to being a fundamental player in Vasco’s plan, he stands out for his balance between defense and attack. In 47 games this season, he has scored four goals and provided five assists. He has deservedly earned his place in the Brazilian team as one of the main names in the role.
