‘Altas Horas’ celebrates 25 years with a special with Caetano Veloso and friends

The program was broadcast on Saturday evening, 11

It was with ‘Alegria, Alegria’ that Caetano Veloso opened the 25th anniversary special Altas Horas on the night of Saturday 11th. ‘On the night of almost December’, he performed in front of giants: Gilberto Gil, Ney Matogrosso, Ivete Sangalo, Xande de Pilares and Mosquito.

The program, as sober and serene as the 83-year-old musician, felt like a living room with conversations between Gil and Caetano, covering everything from how they met and started working together to their diets and arguments.

Over the years, other artists have joined the friendship, born on the streets of Salvador, teaching and completing each other. “I learned by watching Gil’s hand play,” he recalls proudly.

The friends performed “Desde que o samba é samba” and “Super-homem (The Song)” together. The audience couldn’t resist: they remained standing and were moved. The naturalness of the conversation gave way to another: the opening of the thirds created by Gil with Caetano’s voice.

“The boys,” as Ivete calls them, have a “genius not only for music, but for life.” Her “40 different subjects in one song” have moved her “always”. The Carnival lady performed ‘Trem das cores’, a song that returns to her childhood, to the long car journeys she took from Juazeiro with her family.

Gil and Caetano wrote more than ten songs together, a sign of their mutual sympathy. In fact, “like is a word that doesn’t fit, because it’s an extraordinary thing.” The inspiration was the opportunity for the winners to sing “Divino marvellous”, which they composed together for Gal Costa.

In a solo, Gil performed the song about mourning, “Cajuína”. The song tells of when Caetano was able to mourn the departure of his friend Torquato Neto. After a visit from the journalist’s father, who gave him a rose and a glass of cashews, the musician lamented the departure of the man who kept Tropicália alive in the country during his years of exile.

‘O Leãozinho’ toasted the ‘Public Caetano Veloso’, a novelty revealed in the special program of the 25th anniversary: the entire audience of the show will now pay homage to an artist. Ivete, Ney and Gil have also each gained an audience to call their own.

Tom, Zeca and Moreno Veloso also participated in the program. His “harmonious family”, as the musician defined it, goes beyond the sense of union. “Strange Force” was the space where each of their voices could shine together and individually. The dry ending left me wanting more of Veloso’s musicianship together.

The public had the opportunity to get to know Caetano’s children better, understanding their relationship with faith when the phenomenon of the growth in the number of evangelicals in the country was given space in the program. Caetano performed “God Takes Care of Me” alongside Kleber Lucas.

“Two Naira Fifty Kobo” was Ney’s only song of the night.

Coral Ginga & Voz was one of the surprises of the evening with a moving rendition of ‘Terra’, about when the imprisoned Veloso first saw the photo William Anders took of the planet.

Xande and Mosquito, in addition to shining in their interpretation of ‘Gente’, surprised Caetano with a special song for the 25th anniversary.
