Brazil has accomplished a historic feat in bodybuilding: Ramon Dino, in the early hours of this Sunday, 10/12, finally won the Mr. Olympia in the Classic Physique category. After years of “hitting the post”, the native of Acre won the title of the second most prestigious category of the tournament considered the World Cup of this sport. Nicknamed Dinosaur, Ramon is from Acre and is an avowed Flamengo fan. He beat out more than 30 competitors to become the first Brazilian to win a men’s Mr. Olympia competition.
It is worth remembering that the Brazilian Eduarda Bezerra also brought Brazil to the top by winning, in the women’s category, the Wellness category, the lightest division, which rewards the beauty of the forms as well as the muscles. In second place another Brazilian, Isa Nunes, 2024 champion. The Wellness category was created in 2021 and since then Brazil has won every year.
Dino’s journey to the top
Ramon began competing at Mr. Olympia in 2021, where he finished fifth. He then placed second in 2022 and 2023, and finished fourth in 2024. In all these editions, the champion was Canadian Chris Bumstead (CBum), who retired after winning his sixth championship in 2024. In addition to the Olympia, Ramon Dino also competes in the second most important tournament in the world, the Arnold Classic. He was champion in 2023 and runner-up in 2022 and 2024. Even before his title win in the early hours of this Sunday, Ramon was already considered by many to be the greatest Brazilian bodybuilder of all time.
Open or Classic?
It is important to understand: the main category of Mr. Olympia is not Classic Physique, but Open Bodybuilding. The Classic has weight and height limits and the athletes have a more symmetrical, proportional and aesthetically classic body, such as the bodybuilders of the 70s. The Open is the category without weight limit, where the true “monsters” of this sport compete. If Hulk were a bodybuilder, he would be in the Open, never the Classic.
Precisely for this reason only the Open champion is officially called “Mr. Olympia”, despite the enormous prestige of the Classic among fans and athletes. The difference between the categories can also be seen in the value of the prizes: Ramon Dino, champion of Classic Physique, won 100,000 dollars (approximately R$552,000). The Open champion, who will be announced on Sunday evening, will win $600,000 (about R$3.3 million), ten times more.

Male: Open (Mr. Olympia), Classic Physique (Mr. Olympia Classic), 212 lbs (up to 96.2 kg), Men’s Physique (beach), and wheelchair users.
Female: Ms. Olympia, Female physique, Figure, Fitness (with acrobatics), Bikini (lightweight category), Wellbeing.
Understand the controversy
It is important to remember that bodybuilding is a competition of performances and choreographed poses, where judges observe the muscle quality and volume of each athlete, analyzing each muscle group individually. To reach a high level, the athlete goes through years of intense bodybuilding, strict dieting, steroid use and total medical supervision.
The competition includes two phases. The first is called “preview”, with the presence of all the competitors. In it the judges evaluate the competitors and divide them into groups: the first 3, then the athletes from 4th to 8th place and those from 9th to 15th place. Everyone else withdraws: no matter how many athletes participate, they all end up in the rankings from 16th onwards.
The second stage is worth the title. We start from the groups with the worst preview placement (from 15th to 12th place), which are proposed again to define their positions. The sequence continues until reaching the Top 3, when the champion is finally known.
How was Dino’s victory
Nine Brazilians competed in the category. However, only three were in the Top 16 after the first stage (previews), with Dino in the Top 3, along with German Mike Sommerfeld and American Ruff Diesel. In the final presentation, in the early hours of this Sunday, after group and individual presentations, the judges placed Diesel in third place and Sommerfield repeating second place in 2024. In the end, Brazil rose to the top like a dinosaur of Acre. And the athlete erases the sadness of 2024, when he was the favorite, but because he had sweated a lot in the previews, he lost points and was only in fourth place. Ramon, who was very excited when his name came first, received a hug from retired super champion CBum.
