Reinforcements in sight? Ghana consider naturalizing Premier League pair for World Cup

The duo can naturalize

Ghana became one of the African teams to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after beating Comoros 1-0. In the midst of all this, according to the European press, the forwards Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who play in the Premier League, would be willing to change nationality to defend the African country.

However, a possible naturalization of the duo divides fan opinion. This happens because, according to the party, the two would have “turned their backs” to defend the country on other occasions. Another winger, however, claims that the two would be important additions in view of the next World Cup.

Kofi Adams, the country’s minister of sports and recreation, said he was open to the possibility of the duo being naturalized to defend the Black Stars. However, the decision rests with coach Otto Addo.

“Every Ghanaian who knows how to play has the opportunity to go to the World Cup if the coach decides. It doesn’t matter whether the player was part of the team during the qualifiers or not,” Adams said in an interview on the Ghanaian radio station “Asempa FM”.

The minister also said that it is his responsibility and that he will do so if contacted. The duo has Welsh ancestry through their parents.

“This is my responsibility and if you contact me to help me, I will help you. Even some of the players who play now, I have done preparation work to get them into the national team. These are not people from my party, but also those from the opposition, I spoke to them just to get them into the national team,” he concluded.

Nketiah is an old target of the Ghanaian federation, which has been trying to naturalize the attacker for a few years, but has not yet succeeded. He has played for England at most youth levels and was called up by Gareth Southgate in 2023, but did not play.

Callum Hudson-Odoi is also experiencing a similar situation. The attacking midfielder seemed to be considered one of Chelsea’s biggest prospects, but ended up losing space and returned on bad loan to Bayer Leverkusen, only to recently find himself at Nottingham Forest. At international level, he played for the Three Lions at youth level and played three games for the England senior team in 2019 and has not been called up since.
