Star Wars 3: The Most Expensive Plan Might Not Be What You Think

A seemingly innocuous shot from “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” would have cost more than every space battle or fight in the film.

The final part of the Star Wars prequel, Episode III, titled Revenge of the Sith, contains many iconic sequences, be it numerous Latin battles, confrontations between Anakin and Obi-Wan, epic space battles and never-before-seen special effects. Still, the most expensive scene in the movie might not be what you think.

Visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett and producer Rick McCallum revealed in the DVD release’s audio commentary what the most expensive scene in Star Wars Episode III was, and it’s this one.

McCallum confides on DVD: “It was the most difficult sequence in the entire film”. He adds:

It was probably one of the most expensive scenes, partly because we were in the sun, and actually if you look at the shot in slow motion, you can see that the ship actually has to go under the…

(Giet cuts him off): …that thing’s hills and being in the shadows.

For McCallum: “Being in the shade would help”. Roger Gayet adds that the scene, obviously very difficult visually, was definitely not one of his favorite achievements: “It’s one of those scenes in a movie that you don’t think too much about, but it was very difficult to shoot.”.

Combining the sunlight with the false shadows that the ship has to slip through with the characters coming from it and moving in this sunny area, so it turned out to be a difficult task, even more so than ship battles or even combat. The ultimate volcanic.

It is the magic and complexity of cinema that forces the screen to forget the complexities behind the scenes in order to achieve a result that will satisfy the creators and the audience alike.

These Star Wars characters we thought were dead… but weren’t!
