Despite the widespread blackout, the effects were different in each location. Some cities experienced an oscillation for a few seconds, while others experienced a complete power outage for up to an hour.
The fault would have been caused by an unexpected event in the National Interconnected System (SIN). According to the Reuters agency, the concessionaires reported that around 00:30 the so-called Regional Load Alleviation Scheme (ERAC) was activated, a protection mechanism activated by the National System Operator (ONS) automatically which provides for the interruption of power to consumers when there is a need to rebalance the electricity system due to a disturbance.
According to information from the DW agency in Sao Paulo, the blackout affected 937 thousand Enel customers for approximately eight minutes. The company said the problem was caused by actions of the Regional Load Reduction Plan (ERAC), under the responsibility of the National System Operator (ONS). “The load shedding procedure, known as ERAC, occurs automatically, when an event is detected in the SIN, to protect the electricity system,” Enel explained.
In Rio de Janeiro, the fault affected 450,000 Luce customers, who also cited the activation of ERAC and a fault in the SIN as a possible cause of the blackout. In some regions of the state the blackout lasted almost an hour.
In Amazonas, the company responsible for energy supply reported a disturbance to the SIN late Monday night, which interrupted supply in some regions.
