After sharks and spiders, a chimpanzee can embody your worst nightmare at the movies. At any rate, that’s what the first trailer for Primate, the new film from Johannes Roberts – director of 47 Meters Down and Strangers: Prey at Night – suggests.
The story tells about a group of friends who gathered for a vacation in the heavenly environment of Hawaii. Everything is going according to plan until the family chimpanzee Ben becomes a real threat and turns heaven into hell.
Monkey, the horror star
The first images show a film that already promises to be disturbing with a monkey as ruthless as a serial killer. But this is not the first time that the monkey figure is used in horror cinema.
We could cite the movie Link, released in 1986, the George A. Romero horror thriller Incidents of the Journey, released two years later, or even Nope’s Jordan Peele, whose opening scene featured a very violent chimp.
Will Ben become the new horror icon? It seems to be going well.
Primate is expected in theaters on January 21, 2026
