The woman says she frequented the “Ministrão” before feeling ill and losing her sight; The institute’s lawyer maintains that there are no irregularities that prevent its functioning. The authorization was granted by the Health Surveillance
The “Ministrão” bar, in Jardins, in the west of São Paulo, where a customer consumed alcoholic drinks before losing his sight, reopened this Friday 17, more than two weeks after being closed on suspicion of adulteration of drinks with methanol. The authorization to reopen was given by the city Health Surveillance on Wednesday 15th
The only restriction is that the establishment cannot sell distilled beverages: beers and wines are allowed. The ban will be valid at least until the criminalistics institute’s assessments are completed, according to the municipal health department.
“At the request of the plant and after a new health check by the responsible technical group, a ban on the sale of other products that are not related to the methanol investigation was carried out,” the secretariat informed.
The facility’s state registration was suspended by the State Department of Finance and Planning, following a decision by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans).
“The restoration of the state registry takes place after the taxpayer presents documents proving the regularization of the pending issues that led to the suspension”, explained the ministry.
The Bar denies any irregularities
According to the lawyer of the “Ministrão” bar, Júlio Ribeiro, the suspension of state registration is being discussed in court. “It was a clumsy measure by the government to respond to the company. But that doesn’t stop it from functioning. There is no irregularity to keep it closed,” he said.
“No one is more interested than the ‘Minister’ in clarifying all this. We are collaborating, we provide all the notes. The report from our supplier was negative. We therefore want to clarify this matter. The families of the owners frequent the place. We hope that the police will show us the way”, said the lawyer.
What the police say
The general delegate of the Civil Police, Artur Dian, said on Friday: at a press conference on the investigationthat the analysis of the reopening of the “Ministrão” is not within its competence. “It is an administrative decision that is not up to us to analyze,” he said.
“We don’t know if it was due to the reports, but we became aware of the opening quickly due to an administrative decision by the Supervisory Authority [Sanitária]”said the general delegate.
The woman went blind after three caipirinhas
Victim of methanol poisoning, Radharani Domingos, 43, said she went to the “Ministrão” bar on September 19 to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The next day, the interior designer felt ill, reported vision problems and was taken to the emergency room. She hasn’t been able to see since then.
“For a few moments I thought I would see my walls, but I’m just finding my way,” Radharani said as she walked around the house, in an interview with Fantasticfrom TV Globo, 12 October.
Methanol was identified in Radharani’s tests just 10 days after she was admitted to hospital. The ophthalmologist who treated the interior designer after the poisoning said the blindness was irreversible, but recommended a treatment not yet scientifically proven that could bring long-term results.
“The riot right now is trying to figure out why they are adulterating the drink. They poisoned me and they are poisoning other people. It’s revolting that you order a caipirinha and drink methanol,” Radharani said.
