Rapper commented on the use of AI in music in an interview with The Breakfast Club and warned about creative laziness when promoting the album TYCOON
In a podcast interview The Breakfast Club last Friday, the 17th, the North American singer Ty Dolla $ign addressed the use of artificial intelligence in music. He admitted seeing benefits in technology, such as sampling musical excerpts, but criticized the “laziness” it can encourage. According to him: “What worries me is people’s laziness… at the same time… It’s cool for some sampling stuff… I don’t think it will [substituir] what we are doing here.”
The discussion took place on the morning program presented by DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God and Jess Hilarious (with Angela Yee as co-host), during a session in which the artist promoted his album TYCOON (2025), released on the same day. The hosts reacted to the comment: Charlamagne added that, although AI “makes people lazier”, it “will create new sounds and things we didn’t have before*”*, highlighting the positive side of innovation. Ty Dolla $ign still expressed curiosity about the impact on composers, but stated that AI systems are unlikely to have “what we are doing on the streets”.
Furthermore, Ty highlighted that it is necessary to preserve “the authenticity and unique voices” of the artists. He himself has a long career in music production: he started collaborating as a musician and producer (he co-produced the hit “Toot It and Boot It” from the rapper YG) and accumulates composition/production credits on hits, such as “Loyal” (Chris Brown) and “FourFiveSeconds” (Rihanna with Kanye West).
Interestingly, the very Ty Dolla $ign was involved in a recent controversy involving artificial intelligence: the second volume of the collaborative album Vulturesreleased alongside Kanye West in 2024, he was accused of using vocals and excerpts manipulated by AI without transparency. The practice divided the public and critics, generating debates about ethics and authorship in the creative process. Although the album achieved prominence on the charts, the use of technology — especially in tracks like “Field Trip” and “530” — was one of the most controversial points in the project’s reception.
