In an interview, the artist discusses the difficulties that the relationship (and the end) brought her, and how she transposed this into music: ‘I thought I was going to be happy forever’
Lily Allen returned to the music charts with the release of his fifth studio album, West End Girlthis Friday, October 24, 2025. The album is the first by the British singer in seven years, succeeding No Shame (2018).
The album was written and recorded just 10 days after his divorce from David Harborstar of Stranger Things. The 14 tracks mix electronic beats with a frenetic sound and brutally honest lyrics, which reveal the suffering over the end of a four-year marriage. Various sensitive subjects and personal experiences of Allen are revealed to the listener through the songs.

In an interview with Perfect (via NME), the singer explained how the breakup affected her health and well-being. “I have deep issues with rejection and abandonment, which I’ve struggled with for most of my adult life and probably for much of my childhood as well. And I was having an extreme reaction to things at that time,” he says.
The artist also stated that she had difficulties dealing with single life. “It’s hard for me not to have my person, you know? I’m a pretty codependent person. I find it hard to lean on the people who are available to me when I miss the comfort and stability of what’s not available to me.”
Allen and Harbor began dating in 2019 after meeting on the dating app Raya, and married in an intimate ceremony in Las Vegas in September 2020. In early 2025, Allen revealed that he checked himself into a treatment center to deal with the “emotional turmoil” of the separation.
The reason for the breakup, according to the press, was the discovery of an extramarital affair. The album contains numerous lyrics that allude to infidelity, including the title track, “West End Girl”.
In “Relapse,” she sings about how this lawsuit threatened her sobriety, which she has struggled with since 2019. “[O álcool e as drogas] They were a real escape valve for me. People who have only known me since sobriety say, ‘I can’t imagine what you’re like when you’re drunk.’ And I always say, ‘I was fucking horrible.’ […] It was fun for a minute, but then it got really dark,” he told Perfect.
In conversation, Allen He also discussed his attempt at an open marriage, which didn’t work. “It’s not something I ever thought about when I was younger or before I got married,” he said. In “Ruminating” and “Dallas Major”, she sings about the insecurities and difficulties she experienced during this period.
With a metalinguistic approach, in “Let You W/In” Allen sings about how his return to music came about, after years of hiatus. The album’s narrative goes through moments of suspicion, paranoia, shock, sadness and, finally, reaches a type of catharsis: in “Just Enough” she finally shows acceptance of the end of the relationship. “I think you’re in love with someone else, I felt like you moved away and now I’m blaming myself.”
Who is Lily Allen
Lily Rose Beatrice Allenbetter known as Lily Allen, is a British singer, songwriter, actress and presenter, and launched her own record label in 2011.
Their first two albums, Alright, Still (2006) and It’s not Me, It’s You (2009) contains hits from the 2000s, such as “Smile” and “Fuck You“.In the recent release, at 40 years old, Allen remains faithful to the sound that made it popular at the beginning of the millennium, carrying a certain nostalgia in the new songs.
During his hiatus years, Allen dedicated himself to various activities. She had successful performances in plays: she debuted in the West End in 2021, with the play 2:22 A Ghost Story — for which she was nominated for the award Laurence Olivier of Best Actress — and then acted in The Pillowman and in the production of Hedda Gablerfrom Henrik Ibsen. West End is a district that concentrates London’s theatrical elite, and she used this reference to create the title of the new album.
On TV and in the movies, Allen participated in the comedy series Dreamland (2023), playing the character Mel, and from the film How to Build a Girl (2019), where she plays Elizabeth Taylor.
The artist also launched and co-hosted the podcast Miss Me?alongside her friend Miquita Oliver (which went on hiatus last month), and published an autobiography, titled My Thoughts Exactly (2018). In 2022, she returned to singing live, as a special guest of Olivia Rodrigo node Glastonbury Festival and then at the O2, in London.
Despite successful ventures, Lily Allen never stopped composing – she just wasn’t able to create something that sounded interesting enough to release. She felt that many artists were just repeating successful formulas, without originality. “[Era] something observational about the internet and the world. It all seemed very obvious and rubbish,” he said in an interview.
