The saga Lord of the Rings will continue on September 2, with the launch of the spin-off series The rings of power. Originating from Amazon Prime Video, the storyline is already one of the most expensive ever made.

Lord of the Rings is a film saga inspired by the books of the same name by JRR Tolkien, set in the life of the hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood) in Middle-earth. The series, however, takes place thousands of years before the story beyond Lord of the Ringsas of The Hobbit.

So when exactly does the story of the new Amazon Prime Video series take place?

The new series takes place during the early years of the Second Age of Middle-earth created by Tolkien, which lasted about three thousand years. Within this period, The rings of power highlights the rise of Sauron, a character played by Anson Boon. For comparison, the films take place during the late Third Era.

The Rings of Power, according to Prime Video’s official synopsis, will show what powers have been forged, once powerful kingdoms have fallen into ruin and the world has been constantly threatened by great villains.
