In a truly complete moment, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck finally got married in Las Vegas on July 16th. It was a low-key affair, but there was also going to be a second, bigger marriage on the horizon. Everyone, from JLo’s first ex-husband to his contemporaries, have weighed on the wedding, that is, how long it will or will not last. And now, The real housewives of New York Former student Bethenny Frankel shared her thoughts on the challenges the Hollywood couple are likely to face now that they are married.
From his own experiences in his Solo B with Bethenny Frankel podcast, the famous TV personality opened up about how “exciting” it can be at first to be in a relationship in the public eye. But she added that trying to keep up with external perception of reality weighed on her, which she believes could become the case with Bennifer 2.0: Married Edition. The 51-year-old said:
He accuses you. Not only does it affect you, but you believe the emotion is real and part of the relationship. So you’re in a relationship and everyone thinks it’s cool and you’re in a fairytale and you believe what everyone else believes and you’re all in it together. And it’s a dangerous dynamic because it’s not real.
Bethenny Frankel essentially implies that the Lilies The relationship between the co-stars could live mainly on hype and nostalgia, which isn’t good for longevity. Plus, the former reality star thinks the two are doing little to avoid the pitfalls of that hype, just as they did on their first date in the early days of heyday. She pointed to their paparazzi-strewn honeymoon in Paris, also known as one of the busiest cities in the world, as proof that they aren’t as concerned about privacy as they should.
SkinnyGirl’s CEO added that the Batman actor’s well-documented history with alcoholism is another major challenge to their relationship. Ben Affleck has talked at length about his drug addiction and how it affected his first marriage to Jennifer Garner. But Bethenny Frankel seems to think that the increased surveillance surrounding Affleck, JLo and their fairytale second chance will be even more of a trigger for her struggle with alcohol, saying:
Composed [the scrutiny] with a relationship member who is a drug addict, and being a drug addict has its own challenges for the person and the person in relationship with the addict. I call it activation. I have been surrounded by addicts for most of my life, from eating disorders to cigarettes, alcohol, pills and drug forays. I’ve seen a lot of things and I’ve grown very, very fast, very, very young, and I really understand that, and people have triggers. Addicts shouldn’t be treated like they’re made of glass, but stress is not good for an addict.
Interestingly, he went on to say that JLo is more famous than Ben Affleck right now (which is debatable) and that the latter will have “a lot of activation” due to his notoriety. In particular, Bethenny Frankel disputed the fact that Lopez seems to be ramping up the publicity of her “naked pose” wedding when she recently launched her new body care line for her 53rd birthday / honeymoon. In short, Frankel joked that she “makes Meghan and Harry private”.
Now Bravo fans know this all too well by watching Bethenny Frankel for eight seasons onwards RONY (available to stream via Peacock Premium) and her other shows she’s not one to go around the bush, even for those outside of her pay rank like now Mr. and Mrs. Ben and Jen Affleck. However, someone may want to tell you that Bennifer is not new to this.
This is her second time at this rodeo and they may have a better chance than you think. In fact, after getting back together last year, Ben Affleck shared that at this point in his life he has learned to keep the relationship private, sharing only the details he feels good about. JLo echoed those thoughts herself, saying they now know “what’s real, what’s not”.
Of course, all marriages face challenges and Ben and Jen’s should be no different. However, at least their children from previous relationships would have camouflaged well and the newlyweds would have agreed on where to live. So, Bethenny Frankel could end up being one of the naysayers in the footnote of her iconic romance. Time will tell.
