American pay channel Showtime has announced the renewal of “The Chi”, a drama series starring actor Alex R. Hibbert, the revelation of “Moonlight”, for its sixth season.
The renewal comes two weeks before the end of the fifth year of production, which holds the highest ratings in the history of the channel.
“The Chi” has been one of Showtime’s best since debuting in January 2018, with a critical approval rating of 87%. Five seasons later, the adult drama set on Chicago’s South Side continues to exert a strong presence on American pay TV, setting a new audience record, with an audience increase of over 20% over last season.
The title is short for Chicago and the series takes place in the poorest part of that city, following a group of residents who find themselves tied by chance.
In addition to the boy from “Moonlight”, the cast also includes Jacob Latimore (“Sleight”), Birgundi Baker (“Black Lightning”), Yolanda Ross (“The Get Down”), Curtiss Cook (“House of Cards”), Luke James (“Star”) and newcomers Michael V. Epps and Shamon Brown Jr.
Created by Lena Waithe, 2017 Emmy Winner for Best Screenplay in a Comedy for “Master of None”, the attraction is also produced by rapper Common (“Selma”), Elwood Reid (creator of “The Bridge”) and by director Rick Famuyiwa (“Dope – A Dangerous Slide”).
The series is made available in Brazil on the Star + platform.
