According to Mandy Moore, Swift’s “bad reputation” in dancing made her “really crazy”

In 2025, Taylor Swift became the first artist to dominate the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with songs from three different albums, Midnights, The Tortured Poets Department and The Life of a Showgirl. THE The Eras Toura tour that started in 2023, offered fans a retrospective of the trajectory of Swift and consolidated the artist as an unprecedented economic powerhouse: the concert series broke the record as the highest-grossing show of all time and generated more than US$2 billion in revenue.

Despite the undeniable success on the music charts, Swift is often criticized on social media for her lack of dancing skills. Since her return to the stage, several internet users have published videos ridiculing her limited abilities as a dancer and lack of motor coordination.

Behind the scenes of The Eras Tour, this Samantha Jo “Mandy” Moore. One of Hollywood’s most influential choreographers, Moore She is 49 years old and is also a dancer, producer and dance instructor.

She is acclaimed for her work on TV shows such as Dancing With the Stars and So You Think You Can Danceand gained further recognition for The Good Side of Life (2012) and La La Land: Singing Seasons (2017) — which, according to critics, revitalized the musical genre in the modern film industry.

In an interview with The New York Times, Moore talked about the journey of Taylor Swift to become more confident in dancing. “She had a bad reputation for a long time regarding her dancing, so she was really worried,” he said (via NME).

“So we shifted the focus to how the movement was already manifesting in her body — the way she naturally wanted to move. And then we adjusted that: ‘OK, this feels a little weird with your shoulders,’ or ‘let’s stretch your knee here.'”

Moore states that the singer felt enormous pressure over her own performance. Now, she praises the perseverance and dedication of Swift throughout the dance development process. “She works really hard. Everything I put in, she picked up on. And she’s very clear about what she wants, which I love. I’ve found that I can’t create without having some parameters. This ‘do what you want’ thing, to me, feels like chaos.”

In addition to choreographing The Eras Tour, Moore has already been nominated eight times Emmy of Best Choreographyand won on three occasions. In 2025, she was also responsible for the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia”, the opening track of the most recent album by Swift, The Life of A Showgirl.

The Life of A Showgirl was controversially received by fans and critics. While some vehicles praised the fun lyrics and pop sound of the songs, others criticized the similarity with works by different artists and the lyrical fragility of the tracks.

In response, Swift told Apple Music: “I welcome chaos. The rule of show business is: if it’s the first week of my album’s release and you say my name or the title of my album, you’re helping.”

She continued: “I have a lot of respect for people’s subjective opinions about art — I’m not the art police. Everyone has the right to feel exactly how they want, and our goal as artists is to be a mirror. Oftentimes, an album is a really, really wild way of looking at yourself — what you’re going through in life is going to affect how you identify with the music I’m releasing at any given time.”
