She-Hulk on Disney+: Why many special effects scenes were cut during editing

When writer and producer Jessica Gao first walked into Marvel Studios to talk about She-Halk — Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s (Mark Ruffalo) lawyer and cousin — it wasn’t a series dedicated to the character.

In the interview at varietyHe tells how the adventure began. “My first date was to talk about a movie Open the window And She-Hulk was part of my pitch– explains the young woman. He was my favorite character from the comics and I just wanted to see him in the MCU.

At some point, I think so Brad Winderbaum who said, “It feels like you’re showing us a She-Hulk movie with Black Widow.”

He smiled as he replied.guilty But you know what, everything went well.Gao eventually became the creator and showrunner of She-Hulk: Lawyer, which stars Tatiana Maslany (Emmy winner for Orphan Black) as Jennifer – along with several other major MCU characters.

In addition, She-Hulk presents a real challenge for the studio, which has to create a green Hulk over 2 meters long thanks to complex motion capture techniques, added to expensive special effects.

Jessica Gao reflects on a conversation with Marvel Studios honcho Kevin Feige and the last-minute changes she and her fellow writers faced while producing the show:

I used to produce for television, so there’s always a part of my brain that imagines an executive producer yelling at me and blaming me for having an ulcer. So when I was writing the show, I was very aware of it, but I had no idea what the CGI cost. I just knew it was expensive. I asked Kevin Feige early on:

‘How much can we do? How expensive should I be? Give me directions.’ And he said, “If I watch a show called She-Hulk, I want to see She-Hulk.” It was kind of carte blanche to write the way I wanted. And I distinctly remember thinking, “I hope we remember this conversation when the budget comes back and somebody’s mad at me.

Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk

Jessica Gao notes that even after production began, she was asked to cut scenes with She-Hulk and write more with Jennifer Walters to save on the budget. In fact, a lot changed shortly before the official release:

Once we got into pre-production and into production, once somebody had to sit down and start spending all of that, every week I was like, “Can you cut more She-Hulk scenes? Can you edit more scenes with Jen than with She-Hulk? Could she be Jenny in other scenes?’

So there were a lot of things that had to be changed at the last minute to go from She-Hulk to Jen. Even in post-production, we had to cut a lot of shots just because it was She-Hulk.

An instruction that clearly wasn’t followed, at least for the first episode, which includes many scenes with She-Hulk while Jenny discovers her powers. But the sequel seems to be sparing more of the special effects.
