The Shining and It collide: a beloved character (and one with telepathic abilities) will be in the new series. But your story in Derry is darker than you think

With two episodes of It: Welcome to Derry already available on HBO Max, it promises to be the missing glue for a true “Stephen King-verse”. With the return of Bill Skarsgård as Pennywisethe production (by the same creators of the films, Andy and Barbara Muschietti) will connect with other famous works by the horror master. The greatest proof of this came during the New York Comic-Con: a central character from another absolute classic of Stephen King Not only has it been referenced, but it will be an important figure in the series’ plot.

The character in question is Dick Hallorannthe beloved telepathic cook of The Shining. In the new series, he will be played by Chris Chalk (Gotham). The connection comes directly from the books. “Dick Hallorann is in the book of It. So this all came from the head of Stephen [King]”, summarized the producer Barbara Muschietti at the event.

For those “root fans”as the actor joked Chris Chalkthis is not a surprise. In the original novel by It, Hallorann plays a brief but crucial role in Derry’s history. He is cited as one of the founders of the “Black Spot”, a bar aimed at black soldiers that is tragically burned down by a supremacist group. Amidst the flames, dick uses his powers (the “shine” or “the illumination”) to find survivors, saving the lives of Will Hanlon — the father of Mike Hanlon, of the Losers’ Club.

As Welcome to Derry takes place decades before Mike and his gang, the story was adapted to the new temporal reality: Hallorannworking for the military, will use his telepathic ability on a secret mission in the small town. He will cross the family path Hanlonbut from an earlier generation — interacting with Leroy (Jovan Adepo), who in the future will become the grandfather of Mike.

The highlight, however, is that we will see a Dick Hallorann very different. The actor Chris Chalk warned that this is not the “nice gentleman” we know from the Overlook Hotel. “The Dick you know is very nice, but good luck with this one. dickwhich is very different (laughs)”said the actor. “He’s there because he made a big mistake, that’s the truth. […] The series shows dick at a stage of life in which he has a different relationship with himself, with the spiritual world.”

And the connections don’t stop there. At the same Comic-Con, Andy Muschietti also confirmed that the famous prison of A Dream of Freedom (Shawshank) exists in this universe and will at least be mentioned. “There is a character who is sent to prison, wrongly accused, of course […] and he gets sent to Shawshank.”said the director, once and for all sealing the series’ ambition to connect the dots of Stephen King’s vast work.
