Translating the horrors of Stephen King’s imagination into visual media has a long and checkered history. King’s best movies and TV shows have steadily fueled nightmares for decades, from the rabid frightening event that it is cujoto the human spider’s nest in Fog – but we have also seen many adaptations that are not only not scary, but also ridiculous in their endeavors.
With that in mind and knowing how unpredictable AI can be, one might wonder if computers would be up to the task of translating the beloved author’s terror … but new evidence straight from King suggests they could. .
AI art generators are all the rage on the internet right now, with people using programs like DALL-E 2 and Midjourney to create art with all kinds of outrageous tips, and Stephen King recently joined the fun. The author shared Twitter that he had a “tech friend” who used unspecified software to “put Pennywise on a bike”, and the end result was probably exactly what you’d expect:

With all due respect to Tim Curry and Bill Skarsgård (not to mention all the genius artists who helped turn the actors into Stephen King’s most macabre monster) … shit. There are strange vibes of the valley emanating from him thanks to his face which isn’t exactly a face, and the surreal distortion of the whole image only adds to the disquiet. The red balloon staircase is also the icing on the cake, attached to a basket full of who knows what. It’s a terrifying image that would fit perfectly into an illustrated edition of THIS IS.
Speaking of which, I wonder why we haven’t yet seen a comic book adaptation of Stephen King’s 1986 horror epic. Numerous King books have been recreated in the meantime, including Support, the dark tower e series beautiful asleep, and even the comics were made based on the stories “The Lawnmower Man” and “N”. Yet, even if THIS IS it is perhaps the author’s most popular work, the material has not yet passed through it.
For now, fans can definitely be satisfied with the adaptations of THIS IS we saw it, as both the 1990 miniseries and the duology of the 2017/2019 feature film are fantastic interpretations of the source material. Regular readers can also cross their fingers to see the prequel series in development. welcome to derry reunited, although that show was first announced in March as an HBO Max project and its status is unclear amid all the chaos currently underway with the streaming service.
Those looking to see the THIS IS Adaptations will find the miniseries and both films available with an HBO Max membership, albeit 2017 THIS IS can now also be viewed with a Netflix subscription.
