HBO Max cancels production of the new Batman animated series

HBO Max will no longer produce “Batman: Caped Crusader,” a new animated series about the Gotham City hero that caused a stir when it was announced in May last year.

According to the Deadline website, the production is among six new animated projects that have been discarded on the platform, in compliance with Warner Bros. Discovery’s guillotine policy – which is apparently decapitating the streaming animation industry.

“Batman: Caped Crusader” would bring Bruce Timm back to the Batman animated universe, after directing the classic “Batman: The Animated Series” in the 1990s, which simply sold the Harlequin character to Warner Bros..

He was about to work on the new project with none other than directors JJ Abrams (“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”) and Matt Reeves (the new “Batman” movie).

At the time of the announcement of the production, the Warner team were very excited.

“‘Batman: The Animated Series’ was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans,” said Sam Register, head of Warner Bros. Animation. “It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in JJ, Matt and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue the same groundbreaking legacy.”
