Movie theaters are offering $3 tickets for National Film Day in September

Theaters want to see the film Labor Day Weekend Picnic Baskets and see the film on September 3 in celebration of the first National Film Day.

More than 3,000 theaters will participate in the one-day event, which will cover all ticket formats, including Imax. Tours offering special pricing include AMC Entertainment, Cinemark Theaters and Regal Cinemas.

The event is the brainchild of the Cinema Foundation, a new non-profit organization affiliated with the National Association of Theater Owners.

“Following the record-breaking return to theaters this summer, we wanted to do something to celebrate cinema,” said Jackie Brenneman, president of the Cinema Foundation. “We do this by offering a ‘thank you’ to viewers who attended this summer and an additional gift to those who have not yet returned.”

In general, Hollywood studios and movie theater operators hate such drastic price cuts, especially on Saturdays.

However, in this case, it can be beneficial for everyone involved.

Historically, the Labor Day weekend has always been a slow one at theaters as patrons focus on late summer activities. It’s been quieter than usual this year as exhibitors protest the studio’s dramatic slowdown in August production after a massive March-July. The drop is largely due to post-production delays due to the pandemic.

National Film Day will be presented by A24, Amazon Studios, Disney, Focus Features, Lionsgate, Neon, Paramount, Sony, Sony Pictures Classics, MGM/United Artists Releasing, Universal and Warner Bros.
