The sequel to “Beverly Hills Cop” got an official title and added two actors to the cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Chicago 7”) and Taylor Paige (“Zola”).
The fourth film will be called “Beverly Hills Cop: Alex Foley” (Beverly Hills Cop: Alex Foley). Eddie Murphy will reprise the role of Alex Foley, the Detroit cop who, so far, has traveled to Los Angeles three times to solve cases throughout the franchise. The roles of the new actors were not disclosed.
The project is part of a 2019 deal between Netflix and Paramount and only came to streaming after previous attempts to revive the franchise had been thwarted, from piloting a rejected series to a film that would be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Bad Boys For Life”) in 2016.
“Big Cop: Axel Foley” will resume the story interrupted 28 years ago. The first three films were released in 1984, 1987 and 1994 respectively and grossed a total of $ 735.5 million worldwide.
The sequel was written by Will Beall (“Aquaman”) and directed by Mark Molloy, who makes his first feature film after winning numerous awards for his work in advertising. Jerry Bruckheimer, responsible for the original trilogy, continues to produce.
The project was accelerated after Eddie Murphy successfully starred in another 1980s film sequel, “A Prince in New York 2,” which has become one of Amazon Prime Video’s most viewed films but does not yet have a exit date.
