Actor Kiefer Sutherland (“Designated Survivor”) is in final negotiations to star in “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial”, which will be directed by veteran director William Friedkin (from “The Exorcist” and “Killer Joe”).

The film is based on the book by Herman Wouk, set during the Second World War and tells the trial of a naval officer for mutiny, after taking command of a ship because he felt that the captain was behaving unstable and put his life of crew at risk.

“There has never been a mutiny in the US Navy. Herman Wouk virtually created the first and only mutiny in the US military,” Friedkin said in an interview with Deadline. “He invented it and invented everything that would happen around that process, based on the laws that govern it.”

Wouk’s book won the Pulitzer Prize and has been adapted several times for film and TV, the best known adaptation being “Ship of Revolt” (1954), starring Humphrey Bogart. The new version, however, will be different.

“The original work was written for World War II and Wouk included all the pent-up anger in the country over the attack on Pearl Harbor,” the director said. “I updated it so that it is no longer Pearl Harbor. I made it contemporary, involving the Gulf of Hormuz and the Strait of Hormuz, all the way to Iran.”

The Strait of Hormuz provides the only passage between the Persian Gulf and the open sea. It is a critical sea route and an important entry point into the region.

“The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” doesn’t have a release date yet.

Recently seen in the “The First Lady” series, Kiefer Sutherland is only facing the “Rabbit Hole” spy series, also without a preview date.

William Friedkin’s most recent film was the documentary “The Devil and Father Amorth” (2017), about a famous exorcist priest. Since then, he has been looking for a new project to direct.

The director turns 87 this Monday (29/8).
