Director and writer Rian Johnson confirmed that there are still active conversations at Lucasfilm about another possible “Star Wars” trilogy.
After information indicates that a new trilogy is not in Lucasfilm’s plans, Rian Johnson stated otherwise in an interview with Empire. Johnson debuted in the 2017 franchise “Star Wars: The Last of the Jedi,” the second film in the franchise’s most recent trilogy, centered on Rey (Daisy Ridley) starting her Jedi training with Luke Skywalker, while Finn (John Boyega ) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) tries to evade a First Order attack that could end the Resistance.
The film garnered critical acclaim but divided fans of the franchise, with some praising the film’s formula, while others criticizing it for seemingly eliminating the path set by JJ Abrams in “The Force Awakens.”
A new “Star Wars” trilogy began development by Johnson in November 2017, prior to the release of “The Last Jedi”, with potential new films taking place in a separate arc from the Skywalker Saga.
However, recent information has indicated that Lucasfilm is targeting more “Star Wars” anthology films, which would put Johnson’s trilogy on the brink of failure. However, the director and screenwriter may end up returning to the franchise.
Johnson confirmed to Empire that talks for a new “Star Wars” trilogy are still alive and revealed that he and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy are meeting regularly to come up with a plan to produce it.
“I stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we meet often and talk about it. Right now it’s just a matter of timing and when that might happen. It would break my heart if you left me, if I couldn’t go back to that sandbox at some point, ”the director said.
