“The Dragon House” has undergone some changes behind the scenes. Director Miguel Sapochnik will no longer be co-showrunner of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off starting in season two.
The director spent three years on the project and his departure will see “House of the Dragon” creator Ryan Condal (also creator of sci-fi “Colony”) take over as the sole showrunner. Condal will continue to work closely with the author of that universe’s books, George RR Martin, and the rest of the production team.
Sapochnik rose to prominence as responsible for the famous sixth season episode of “Game of Thrones” of the Battle of the Bastards, but was also heavily criticized for his fondness for natural lighting in night scenes, which left the finale of the original series in the dark – since, by the way. , happened in many scenes of the premiere of “House of the Dragon”, even in 4k definition.
In place of Sapochnik, the production will add director Alan Taylor, another “Game of Thrones” veteran (who also directed “Thor: The Dark World”), who will shoot the main episodes of the second season.
The decision to leave the series was made after the director signed a deal with HBO to develop new projects. He will remain as executive producer – a more symbolic role rather than executive – for the duration of the fantasy series.
“Working in the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe over the past few years has been an honor and a privilege, especially having spent the last two years with the incredible cast and crew of ‘The House of the Dragon’. I’m so proud of that. that we made the first season and we are very happy with the enthusiastic reaction of our viewers, “Sapochnik said in a statement.
“It was incredibly difficult to decide to move on, but I know it’s the right choice for me personally and professionally. In doing so, however, I am deeply comforted to know that Alan will join the series. He is someone I know and respected for a long time, to long, and I believe this valuable series could not be in safer hands, “he added. “I am delighted to continue to be part of the HBO family and ‘House of the Dragon’ and of course I wish Ryan and his team all the best for Season 2 and beyond.”
Alan Taylor also said: “It is a pleasure and an honor to be back at HBO, to delve into the world of Targaryens. I am looking forward to working closely with Ryan as ‘House of the Dragon’ grows into its second season. Ryan, Miguel and George have launched an extraordinary story, in a rich and fascinating world. Returning to Westeros will be a huge undertaking and I am looking forward to the challenge. “
The series was renewed for a second season five days after the premiere, after the inaugural episode was seen by 20 million viewers in the United States during this period.
“A Casa do Dragão” was also HBO’s most-watched release in Latin America and Europe, but those numbers were not revealed.
The first spin-off of the “Game of Thrones” phenomenon (2011-2019) follows the Targaryen family, the clan of Daenerys, 200 years before the events of the original series, and focuses on the succession crisis of King Viserys (Paddy Considine , from “Peaky Blinders”), with storylines, battles, dragons and an absolutely epic atmosphere.
The dispute arises because Viserys has chosen his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy, from “Truth Seekers”), as heir to the Iron Throne. Although she is ready to reign from childhood, her rise is not accepted by those who prefer one man to power: the king’s brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith (“Doctor Who”).
The list of notable characters in the conspiracy again highlights Rhys Ifans (“The Amazing Spider-Man”) as Hand of the Hand (the second most powerful official position in the Seven Kingdoms), Olivia Cooke (“Bates Motel”) as her daughter Alicent Hightower and Steve Toussaint (“It’s a pity”) as Lord Corlys Velaryon, the sea serpent.
