Rings of Power: What record has the Prime Video series adapted from The Lord of the Rings already set?

Even before it aired, the Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings already held the record that distinguishes it from any other series ever made.

Even before its release, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has already broken the record! It is the most expensive series in the history of the small screen. Set thousands of years before The Lord of the Rings, it chronicles the creation of the artifacts known as the Rings of Power and their influence on Middle-earth.

According to the magazine time (confirmed by the government of New Zealand, where the series is filmed), The Rings of Power’s first season cost Amazon $468 million. Thus, an eight-episode adaptation of The Lord of the Rings will average $58.5 million per episode.

That’s significantly more than the 20 million from 10 episodes of House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones and a direct competitor to the series in terms of theme (fantasy) and scope (a globally recognized license).

Amazon spent lavishly

However, the 468 million figure is worth considering as it will likely include marketing costs and build sets and accessories that will be reused in future seasons. Therefore, the cost of one episode is probably less than 58.5 million, but even so, the first season will still be the most expensive in the history of television.

According to varietyAmazon reportedly paid about $250 million for Lord of the Rings television rights and $13 million for Super Bowl ads to run a teaser for the series. Suffice it to say, the bill is salty. Especially since filming for season 2 starts in October, which will add to the costs again.

So it’s imperative for Amazon that the series succeeds in order to make these pharaonic costs profitable. To find out if the much-anticipated box will be available, head over to Prime Video tomorrow 2 September from 3am for the most fans to discover the first two episodes of Rings of Power.
