In an interview with QA, Mikkelsen said, “You can take preparing for a role to an insane level. And if the movie sucks, what will you have achieved? Should I be impressed that you didn’t get out of character? You should have dropped the idea since the beginning! How do you prepare to play a serial killer? Are you going to spend two years experimenting?”

For Mikkelsen, “the whole idea is too pretentious” and the method is not worth it.
