AlloCiné: How is the new season of See different from others?

Jason Momoa: This season is more explosive than previous seasons. It is a sequence of bombs and explosions. It is indeed a merciless war and chaos that reigns. Baba Vos, my character, tries to protect his family to the end. He faces new challenges.

His wife is now with someone else. But he knows how to persevere and will face all the obstacles on the way. This is what a father does for his family: how far will he go to protect his family?

How does this series differ from other sci-fi and action films you’ve worked on?

It’s such a different show than anything I’ve done before. Cinematically and visually, it’s another experience. A game for those who cannot see, who must trust their hearing and instincts, is unique.

It’s a constant challenge on set, probably the most important in my career. The most emotional role in my acting life! I hope the audience likes this last season.

Can you explain the game of the warrior who can’t see in more detail?

When I fight, I can’t look at my opponent because I’m blind. That’s why it’s difficult and dangerous to counter like this, swing a weapon without hitting someone in the face, while maintaining the perfect illusion of hitting.

The ultimate challenge, as an animal, is to trust all the other senses: hearing, smell, touch… such a battle is much more real than just shooting a gun. I think it makes you a better actor, a better fighter.

Do you think a series featuring blind warriors doing incredible things can change the perception of the blind?

I had an intuition that this incredible show with such kind people as show producer Jonathan Topper could only have a positive effect on the perception of the blind.

You can’t imagine all the prep work we’ve all gone through to be as realistic as possible and honor the truly blind people. All of us, including Apple, which is sponsoring the series, have poured our hearts and efforts into showcasing the visually impaired.

I want to find other roles as rich as Baba.

How do you physically prepare for such a series?

We filmed the 2nd and 3rd seasons in a row. It was a lot of effort and I got hurt during the filming, I broke my shoulder. I also had a hernia. I was “broken”! Therefore, filming the last season was the most time-consuming and I was the weakest physically.

Also, because of our extended stay in Toronto due to covid, I was unable to return home to the US. There is a parallel between what happened in my life and my character’s journey. It was painful and I tried to experience it all as Baba saw it on the screen. It was not easy to survive this ordeal with such an emotionally and physically demanding shoot. But I managed to find my form and then I was able to continue shooting Aquaman.

When you watch the last season of See, you get the feeling that I was on top of my game when in reality I was hurting and limited. I gave it my all and I believe the result is what you would expect from a series like this.

Has this series “changed” you in any way?

It made me want to do more great series even more. I want to find other rich roles like Baba but it will be better. I’m very proud of what we’ve done with See. It was devastating re-recording my voice and emotions in post-production for the final sequence of this season, which we shot over five ultra-intense days.

It was very difficult to emotionally return to Baba’s place, to relive this battle and then say goodbye to my hero again. I felt completely exhausted by the end of this post, but again, what a fabulous experience I was able to experience!

It seems that if this continues, the future of humanity may look like See. What do you think and what is your vision for our future?

I’m just an actor. I’m not sure people care what I think about the future of humanity. Either way, we live in terrible times with this pandemic. This is the only way we can realize our weakness. We are very lucky to be here.

When we see all these images coming to us from the universe through telescopes, we can only marvel. Coming from Stargate Atlantis and See, I’m just wondering what will happen in the future. It can be scary, it really is.

And finally, what does this series represent to you?

It’s the first time I’ve been able to experience a character with a full journey from start to finish. Especially compared to other roles whose emotional arc was left hanging or the ending was not at all satisfying. As with Khal Drogo, Ronon Dax or Declan Harp.

While I’m proud to be a part of an amazing franchise like Dune, this role touched me deeply. It also allowed me to learn a lot, both as an actor and as a man. I feel like I’ve matured with this series. It was an amazing experience to play someone who is blind, it makes you feel more humble and respectful.
