Director Joe Wright, responsible for the film “The destiny of a nation” (2017) about Winston Churchill, will direct the “M” series, about the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

Based on the book “M – O Filho do Século”, by Antonio Scurati, the series tells the birth of fascism in Italy and the rise of Mussolini.

The attraction was written by Stefano Bises (“Gomorra”), in collaboration with Davide Serino (“I comici”). The production is entrusted to Lorenzo Mieli (“The hand of God”).

“Writer [Scurati] understood and put on paper, with facts and documents and everything, that Mussolini is the boy who created what we know today as populism and fascism: it was him and only him “, said Mieli, in an interview at the Venice Film Festival in Venice, where he launches his new film, “Bones and All”, directed by Luca Guadagnino (“Call me with your name”).

The producer also said he chose Wright to direct the series because he liked the way the director approached politics in “The Fate of a Nation,” playing another World War II leader. “I love the way he has handled politics and I love the way he changes gender.”

In addition, Mieli also spoke about the importance of the series, especially these days.

“Fascism is something that is relevant to everyone today. It has been relevant in the last few decades, but it is particularly relevant now around the world,” he said. “And it’s interesting because, before Trump, the United States and Anglo-Saxon culture thought fascism was something that wasn’t on their radar. But now it is. That’s why I chose an Anglo-Saxon director.”

“M” doesn’t have a premiere date yet.

Joe Wright is currently involved in the period drama “Stoner,” with Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”), currently in pre-production.
