“House of the Dragon” and “The Rings of Power”: similarities and differences between the series

As the release date announcements for “House of the Dragon” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” showed that the series would pretty much come together, the productions began to confront each other. But what are the real similarities between them and how are the two different?

The opening question should actually be: is there any similarity between them? The answer is yes, but not many, and some of them I can admit are forced. The two series arrive almost at the same time and it can be said that they try to reach a similar audience.

Both are based on the works of great fantasy authors. “House of the Dragon” adapts parts of the book “Fire & Blood”, by George RR Martin, while “The Rings of Power” is based on fragments of the work of JRR Tolkien.

Although Tolkien died when Martin was only 25, and the two are not known to have interacted at any point in their life, there are strong influences from Tolkien’s work on that of Martin, who is known as “the American Tolkien”.

Furthermore, both are epic fantasy series, set in alternate worlds, where magic is a reality and there are fantastic creatures. The two series are also multi-million dollar super-productions, with “The Rings of Power” occupying the position of the most expensive series in history.

We can also highlight the protagonists: in both series we have strong and determined women who occupy this position – Galadriel in “The Rings of Power” and Rhaenyra in “The Dragon’s House”.

Another great similarity is that both series are prequels to blockbusters from the past: “The Rings of Power” takes place thousands of years before the events of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, while ” House of the Dragon “takes place about 200 years before” Game of Thrones “.

Finally, both of them are extremely well done and take us to different worlds of different peoples, dragons, magic and betrayals.

What’s so different between the series?

There will certainly be more differences, and perhaps some similarities, over the course of the other episodes, after all only two episodes were released for each production. But comparing the two productions in their essence is rather complicated.

On the one hand, “The Rings of Power” is more of a construction of the world, presenting different peoples at a completely new time for the viewer, and the goal remains the good old battle between good and evil.

On the other hand, “House of the Dragon” is more focused on power struggles, and is much more concentrated in one place, with a more limited number of relevant characters even than its predecessor “Game of Thrones”.

If, on the one hand, “The Rings of Power” presents this world from place to place, until different parts of it eventually collide over the course of the story, “House of the Dragon” already makes it very clear where they are. going things: a big mess in succession to the throne of a king.

!

Also, since there is this clearer difference between good and evil in “The Rings of Power”, we get to know the different peoples without the eternal distrust that “Game of Thrones” lent to “The House of the Dragon”, where anyone is able to turn on the other at any time, no matter how friendly they seem.

Despite being epic and amazing in their own way, “House of the Dragon” and “The Rings of Power” have such different approaches to fantasy, I think if they weren’t released so closely, the series would not be in release compared to as I am today.

The third episode of “House of the Dragon” arrives this Sunday at 10pm on HBO and HBO Max, while the third of “The Rings of Power” will debut next Friday at 1am on Prime Video.
