Director Robert Rodriguez announced on Instagram that filming for the new film in the “Spy Kids” franchise has ended. Sharing two photos with his son, Racer Rodriguez, one on the set of the second feature, from 2002, and another now, he wrote: “Not much has changed. It’s just that now he’s co-writer, co-producer and he’s a a little heavier “.
Rodriguez released the original film in 2001, followed by “Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams” the following year and “Spy Kids 3: Game Over” shortly thereafter. But he let several years pass to resume the saga with “Spy Kids 4” in 2011, showing the original children as teenagers.
The original cast included Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as parents, and Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara as children. Until the current film, the four actors had participated in the entire franchise.
The current production, developed for Netflix, stars Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) and Zachary Levi (“Shazam!”) As the parents of the new “Spy Kids”. Adult protagonists of the plot will play a couple of international spies, while their children will be played by Everly Carganilla (“The Afterparty”) and newcomer Connor Esterson.
The new “Spy Kids” is Rodriguez’s second children’s revival on Netflix. The reboot was commissioned in the wake of 2020’s hit “Little Great Heroes”, in which the director saved the characters from his film “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D” (2005) to the streaming platform.
