American platform Peacock canceled “Rutherford Falls”, a new creation by Dan Schur (“Parks and Recreation”), after its second season.
In a statement in response to the decision, showrunner and co-creator Sierra Teller Ornelas indicated that the team will try to find a new home on another platform, but no canceled series was saved from “Manifest” a year ago. from free- from broadcast TV to streaming.
The series was praised for its portrayal of Native Americans, both in front of and behind the camera. Critically acclaimed, it had an average rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Its cancellation is the second in a row for an attraction by Dan Schur, whose “Field of Dreams” film adaptation project was canceled in June, a month before filming began.
Schur created “Rutherford Falls” in collaboration with Ornelas and actor Ed Helms. He and the actor worked together on another television hit, “The Office,” written by Schur and starring Helms.
The comedy revolves around two longtime best friends, Nathan Rutherford (Helms) and Reagan Wells (Jana Schmieding, “Blast”), who find themselves at a crossroads – literally – when their small country town on the edge of a reservation indigenous, it becomes “threatened” by progress. Nathan is a descendant of the town’s founder and wants to defend his ancestor’s statue from being removed by the city hall, while Reagan tries to build an indigenous cultural center that not even Indians care about.
The series made TV history for including five indigenous writers on its production team, a milestone in the portrayal of Native Americans on US television. Writers include Schmieding herself (descendant of the Cheyenne and Lakota Sioux nation), Ornelas (Navajo), Bobby Wilson (Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota), Tai Leclaire (of the Mohawk and Mi’kmaq nation) and Tazbah Chavez (descendant of the Paiute, Navajo and Apache).
The cast also features Michael Greyeyes (of the nation of Muskeg Lake Cree, who starred in “I Know This Much Is True”), Jesse Leigh (“Heathers”) and Dustin Milligan (“Schitt’s Creek”).
