Over the course of eight seasons, many actors have been injured on the set of Game of Thrones. The cast of its spin-off series, House of the Dragon, was no exception. Matt Smith wouldn’t say otherwise.
The interpreter of Prince Daemon Targaryen had to perform many tricks, because he is not only a knight, but also the Lord Commander of the Watchtower of Port Real and an excellent dragon rider. So the shoot was intense for the British actor, who was confident HollywoodReporter :
“There were a lot of stunts and it was a challenge for quite a long time. It took 10 months to shoot. So it was physically exhausting. But there are also big scenes where you sit around a table, which is quite difficult. Because there are so many characters to shoot. It takes days and you have to be sharp and concentrated.”
And what had to happen happened, Matt Smith was injured on the set of Dragon House: “It was a stunt in Portugal where I was wearing a brace. It hit me hard in the neck. It hurt like hell in my neck—literally, metaphorically (“neck pain” is English for “breaking a leg”), and physically. .”
Contrary to what one might think, this is not a minor injury, as more than six months after the end of filming, the actor is still suffering from the after-effects of the injury: “Actually, after the interview I’m going to the physio to work on the injury.”
Like his previous colleagues, Matt Smith had an accident at work that he could not escape. Still, he was well aware that the Game of Thrones experience is difficult, as he hesitated for a long time to accept the role of Damon, as he told The Hollywood Reporter:
“My agent called me and I said, ‘Oh, I don’t know. It’s quite difficult, isn’t it? It’s hard to keep track and then deja vu”. But then they came back and I went to try. And that’s it.”
But what convinced him was the presence of Paddy Considine in the casting: “He’s already been offered the role of King Visser I, and I’ve been a huge fan of Paddy’s and always wanted to work with him, so that was a real plus.
Of course, the character of Damon Targaryen interested him for several reasons: “I love the relationship with his brother. He’s a brilliant character because you never know what he’s thinking. I like his ambiguity. He’s a ruthless person. But in many ways, he’s authentic and believes he’s acting within his rights.”
It’s hard to find another actor to play Daemon Targaryen instead of Matt Smith. But the actor will have to prepare for more stunts in the future as Dragon House has already been renewed for a second season!
